Hanford Lam - Piano Teacher and Accompanist in Melbourne
Hanford is a first-class Honours graduate from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. He studied with Dr Joel Crotty and Tamara Smolyar, supplementing his comprehensive education with masterclasses by local and international concert pianists including Anatoly Documentov (Russia), Lisa Moore (USA), Stephen Hough (UK), and Max Cooke (Aus). Hanford holds a current Working with Children Check as well as full accreditation from the VMTA.

As a pianist, Hanford has toured China with the Australian International Opera Company (2016), and regularly participates in competitions and festivals including the UCSI International (semi-finalist, 2018), Great Composers Competition (2nd Prize, 2016), Monash Australian Classical Music Prize (finalist, 2018), 3MBS The Talent (2017, live radio performer), Melbourne Bach Competition (finalist, 2012), and Knox Piano Awards (2nd Prize, 2012). He is also the recipient of the Joan Earle Piano Prize (2018) from Monash University. Hanford's involvement with the pipe organ spans numerous performances for ANZCO events, Monash Academy Orchestra (2017), as well as solo recitals at All Saints East St Kilda (2016) and St Francis-in-the-Fields Mooroolbark (2017). He won the MHS Darryl Towers Prize (2013) and was organ scholar at All Saints East St Kilda from 2014-2015. Hanford is currently the W.G. Price organ scholar at St Johns Toorak (2017-19).

In 2018, Hanford founded the Studio 23 Choir. His choral work includes Adult Glee Club (2017-18), The Melbourne Singers, Sing for Recovery (2016-18), and The Savoy Singers. He has worked with multiple school productions and also taught at John Monash Science School in 2018.

Hanford's teaching style is highly energetic and he seeks to engage his students with creative interactive activities to develop strong technical and musical understanding of piano playing. Apart from teaching, Hanford is an experienced accompanist for graded and diploma exams as well as university auditions and exams. A strong sight-reader, Hanford works with all instruments and voices of all levels.
